Vale of Leven Juniors 5-4 Maryhill
Youngster Adam Gibbons scored an injury time winner, as Vale of Leven grabbed their first victory of pre-season against Maryhill.
In an incredible game at the Millburn, Craig McEwan’s own goal gave the Alexandria side the lead before quickfire strikes from Jay McInally and Craig Patterson put the visitors ahead at half-time.
Lee McGeachy equalised early in the second half from the penalty spot, with Maryhill again taking the lead thanks to a double from Ged Dobbs - including a stunning overhead kick.
However Brian Brown’s men scored three times in the final 14 minutes to turn the game around, with a double from Greg Ross and Gibbons’ injury-time strike securing a remarkable comeback.
And Brown was delighted with the character shown by his side.
He said: “The players’ spirit to come from 4-2 down is a good sign for things to come. The guys kept on pushing hard.
“When it went to 4-2, I’m not sure that was a reflective scoreline. But we still need to work a wee bit on our defending. We lost some really bad goals. But we looked a lot fresher going forward.
“To be fair, both teams went at it right from the very start. It was more like a league game than a friendly.
“There were plenty of meaty challenges, plenty of goals. Both teams played some good football.
“It was a good workout for everybody and a good 90 minutes to get in the legs.”
Vale pre-season campaign continues tonight (Wednesday June 30) when Johnstone Burgh visit Millburn. Kick off is 7pm and fans are welcome to attend.
