Brown bin compostable food waste bag delays reported at number of NI councils

If you are having trouble getting your hands on the green food bags for your brown bin – you are not the only one.

Some Northern Ireland councils have reported supply delays, with one saying it is as the result of "a combination of factors including Brexit".

Householders across Belfast and North Down are among those who have complained they haven't had a new supply for some time.

A spokesperson for Belfast City Council said: "Lead times from suppliers of food waste bags have been extended in recent months as a result of a combination of factors including Brexit. If residents encounter delays in obtaining food waste bags, they can still recycle their food waste by wrapping in newspaper or placing directly in their brown bins or food caddies."

Ards and North Down however said it isn't having issues.

A spokesperson for their waste collection team said: "We are not experiencing any issues with the supply of food bags for recycling. Our bags arrived as scheduled and have been delivered to residents throughout the Borough."

Mid Ulster District Council admitted: "We are down to our last few boxes of caddy liners. When placing an order for another delivery of liners, we were advised it would be received by the end of this month."

And a spokesman for Mid and East Antrim said: "We have been advised of a slight delay on the delivery of caddy liners this autumn. No reason has been given for this and we will continue to keep our residents informed."

Antrim and Newtownabbey, however, said: "We have no issues with supplies of green bags at present."

Derry City and Strabane also said: "This is not a problem they are currently experiencing."

We contacted all 11 councils for comment and six responded prior to publication.
