'Brought tears to my mum's eyes'.... Liverpool pub giving out free food during lockdown

A Liverpool pub is doing its bit for the community during lockdown by giving away free food to the most vulnerable - and it's been a huge success with customers.

Unable to open to customers due to the lockdown restrictions, the family who run the pub have decided to do their bit to help people in need at this difficult time.

Twice a week, The Edge at Joey Orr’s in Walton is offering the free pub grub to the elderly and most vulnerable in the nearby area.

Every Friday, people in the local community are getting dishes like fish and chips and sausage and mash, delivered to their door, while on Sundays staff at the pub have been plating up free roast dinners.

The pub remains closed, but customers are asked to nominate someone who they think deserves a free meal, via messenger on The Edge at Joey Orr's Facebook page.

The pub is also hosting Facebook live performances from local entertainment acts on Sunday afternoons, to keep the pub spirit going.

Joseph Orr, whose dad Paul runs the pub, said: “We have an amazing community spirit here at The Edge and so many amazing people have rallied around to help us achieve this twice every week.

“The response has been amazing and so touching. These people have no one and they’re not expecting it when we come knocking at the door in lockdown.”

The gesture has gone down well with customers, with many being quick to nominate people including NHS and key workers, people who are shielding, and those struggling to cope with loneliness.

One customer, whose parents received free meals, posted on the pub's Facebook page to say: "We thank you. Made my mum and dads day. Thank you so much. They're not on social media so have no clue what you have all been doing so they were surprised and so made up. Thank u all".

Another added: "Thank you so much brought tears to my mums eyes. She was not expecting it. We really appreciate it".
