Brothers plead not guilty to meat grinder bomb plot

Two brothers accused of plotting to attack a passenger plane with a bomb hidden in a meat grinder have pleaded not guilty in the Sydney Supreme Court.

Khaled Khayat, 49, and Mahmoud Khayat, 32, are facing two charges each of planning or preparing to commit a terrorist act.

It is alleged the brothers were planning to target an Etihad flight from Sydney to Abu Dhabi on July 15 last year with an improvised explosive device (IED).

Police alleged the IED was built under instruction from a senior Islamic State (IS) controller in Syria.

The brothers were arrested as part of terror raids in Sydney in July last year, and have been ordered to stand trial in March 2019.

The charges relate to two periods between April 13, 2017 and July 29, 2017.

In a press conference after the brothers were arrested, police accused them trying of two separate plans — one to get the IED on to a plane, and another to detonate a "rotten egg bomb" on a Sydney bus.

Police alleged the IED was to be planted in the luggage of a brother, who was not aware of the plan.

They described the IED as a "high-end military-grade explosive", which did not get past airport security and was disassembled by one of the accused after the plan was aborted.

Police alleged a second plan was then hatched after discussion between one of the accused and the IS controller on how to create a "chemical dispersion device".

Hydrogen sulphide, known as "rotten egg gas", is highly toxic and often fatal for people exposed to it. It is known for its rotten egg smell.
