Brothers decorate mum's house with 50,000 lights for Christmas and raise £92k for charity

Getting into the festive spirit comes easily for some. Brothers behind one of Britain's most festive Christmas homes have covered their house with 50,000 lights, creating a spectacular light show that is attracting visitors from far and wide.

Builders Lee and Paul Brailsford have spent 27 years turning their mum Rosemary's house into an idyllic winter wonderland and have even raised over £92k for charity with the festive effort. Money raised goes to Wallace & Gromit's Grand Appeal which helps little ones at Bristol Children's Hospital.

The display includes lights as well as life-size Santas, snowmen, rope-light shapes, trains, elves and a large reindeer family in the garden. Recognised as one of the largest private Christmas lights displays in the UK it takes six weeks to carefully piece together the display.

The brothers said: ''This year we are doing our famous cookie cabin with hot chocolates, raffles, cookies & cakes.'' A light switch-on took place on December 1 at the family home in Brentry, Bristol and will light up every night through Christmas.

The light display is enjoyed by locals and and visitors who travel to Brentry, Bristol to soak up the festive spirit lovingly curated by the Brailsford brothers (SWNS)

The light show started in 1994 when the brothers visited their local B&Q on Boxing Day. They spotted half-price Christmas lights which were used to decorate mum Rosemary's house.

As per the brothers' website, the number of lights and decorations increased year on year, including life-size nativity figures imported from America. The brothers said: "As the lights display got bigger, we moved on to other parts of the house including roof, garage and garden.

"It takes a lot of setting up and that’s why we start in October. As there was a lot of public interest in the display, we thought it would be a good opportunity to raise money for local charities.

Over the years the Christmas light display has grown, which now includes life-size Nativity figures and a reindeer family in the garden (SWNS)

"We got in contact with Southmead hospital and decided to do it for the Tiny Lives campaign and continued to do so for the next three years until their campaign ended hitting their targets. So then we had to find a new charity and came across The Wallace and Gromit's Grand Appeal at the children's hospital in Bristol.

"In 2007 we raised a massive £1566.12 for Cots for Tots campaign, we are hoping do even better this year so we will see how well will get on." The light display will run till January 2 2022, from 5pm – 9pm.

If you wanted to see the festive light extravaganza for yourself, visit the Facebook page for more information. You can donate via the Brailsford's Just Giving Page or at collection boxes outside the property.
