Nov. 04--Two brothers have been charged in connection with a fatal shooting in August that has already resulted in another man being charged, officials said Wednesday.
Quentin Bradley, 29, and Quan Evans, 26, appeared before Judge Laura Sullivan at the Leighton Criminal Court Building. She set bail for Evans at $800,000 and Bradley at $700,000, officials said.
The two men were charged with first-degree murder along with Robert Nathaniel, of the 1110 W. 50th Street who had previously been ordered held in lieu of $1 million bail in connection with the same slaying.
Bradley, of the 5000 block of South May Street, and Evans, of the 8400 block of South Winchester Avenue, who prosecutors said in court are brothers, along with Nathaniel are charged with the Aug. 26 killing of John Short, 23, at 7:30 p.m. in an alley off the 1100 block of West 51st Street.
During the brothers' court hearing Wednesday, prosecutors said that before Short's slaying there was an argument between two young girls over the way one of them was dressed. The argument then continued and led to adult family members of the girls to become embroiled in the argument, prosecutors said.
Later, two people went to a nearby food and liquor store on 51st and May streets where Bradley was working to get him to resolve the dispute among the families, prosecutors said.
After not being able to resolve the dispute, the people left the store.
Along with Bradley, Evans was at the store but the two left briefly in a vehicle and returned to find Nathaniel who they motioned over to the vehicle. Evans allegedly handed a gun to Bradley who in turn gave it to Nathaniel.
After a brief conversation, Evans and Nathaniel got into the car and Evans drove the two men away leaving Bradley in the liquor store parking lot. After they returned, witnesses saw Nathaniel get out of the car with a gun in his hand.
The two witnesses who had been trying to get the earlier argument resolved said Nathaniel allegedly shot at them without hitting them.
The witnesses then went home and told others, including John Short, about being fired upon. After that, Short along with several others went in an an alley behind the 1110 block of West 51st Street. Nathaniel came out and fired shots in the direction of Short and others. Short was struck in the back and died at the scene.
Evans has a pending aggravated unlawful use of a weapon charge in another case.
