Brother of notorious criminal George 'the Penguin' Mitchell dies

Paddy Mitchell, a brother of notorious criminal George "the Penguin" Mitchell, has died aged 73.

Gardai are expected to attend Mitchell's funeral in Dublin.

It's understood he will be laid to rest on Wednesday at Mount Jerome Cemetery and Crematorium near Harold's Cross.

Paddy Mitchell was jailed for two years in April, 2003 for failing to make tax returns worth over €1million.

Mitchell, with an address of Benbulbin Road, Drimnagh, had pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Court to three counts of failing to make tax returns.

The judge at the time said he had acquired 13 Dublin properties after 1980 under fake names and under names of his associates.

After renting these out, he failed to make tax returns for the years 2000, 2001 and 2002.

A Revenue Commissioner Officer and Criminal Assets Officer told the court Mitchell signed an agreement agreeing to pay off his tax liabilities through selling six out of the 10 properties that were the focus of the investigation.

Later in 2003, five of Mitchell's houses were sold on behalf of the Criminal Assets Bureau.
