Brother of L.A. Dodgers pitcher Josh Ravin shot five times in West Hills

Oct. 05--The brother of Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Josh Ravin was seriously wounded Sunday in a shooting in West Hills.

Ravin's older brother, Joel, was pulling into his driveway about 1:45 a.m. in the 22900 block of Vanowen Street when the gunman approached him and got into a confrontation, said Los Angeles police Sgt. Javier Lara. At some point during the dispute, the gunman brandished a handgun and shot Joel Ravin multiple times while he was still seated in his car.

The gunman fled before police arrived, Lara said.

Joel Ravin was taken to an area hospital and is in a stable condition, he said.

Josh Ravin, who made his debut with the Dodgers this summer, announced the shooting Sunday on Twitter, describing the gunman as mentally unstable.

"We don't need gun control," Ravin said. "We need mental health control!"

He said his family and detectives knew the gunman's identity. But the gunman had not been arrested as of Monday morning, Lara said.

Detectives planned to follow up on leads, he added.

The siblings' mother, Lana Ravin, told KTLA-TV that her son's neck, spine, kidney and arm were hit by bullets.

"I'm just so sad about the whole thing," Lana Ravin told KTLA. "It's hard to believe. You know?"
