Brooks Koepka withdraws from US Open at Winged Foot due to injury

Brooks Koepka has withdrawn from next week's rescheduled US Open due to injury.

Originally supposed to take place in June but postponed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, golf's second major tournament in 2020 is due to be held between September 17-20 at Winged Foot in New York.

However, Koepka will not attempt to win a third US Open title in four years after confirming on social media that he would be sitting out the tournament.

Taking to his official Twitter account on Wednesday evening, the former world no1 - US Open champion in both 2017 and 2018 - said: "Unfortunately, I have decided to withdraw from next week’s U.S. Open.

"I'm looking forward to getting healthy and competing at 100% again very soon."

Koepka has been battling knee problems for several months and last year underwent stem cell treatment on his left patella.

He was absent from the recent FedEx Cup playoffs and it remains to be seen if the four-time major winner will be ready to take part in the Masters, which is being held at Augusta National in November.
