‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ to end next season

The misadventures of Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg, left) and Ray Holt (Andre Braugher) on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” will end next season. | NBC

To paraphrase Detective Jake Peralta, the news for fans of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” is not so “noice.”

NBC announced Thursday that the critically acclaimed cop comedy starring Andy Samberg and Andre Braugher will delay its eighth season until 2021-22, after coronavirus production shutdowns made a return next month — as initially planned — impossible.

Instead, 10 new episodes are scheduled to air during the next TV season, but they’ll mark the end of the series’ run. The comedy aired on Fox for its first five seasons, and when that network canceled it, NBC — which produces the comedy — rescued it. Its most recent season ended last April.

While always low-rated on TV, the show has a strong digital audience, won a Golden Globe in 2014 as best comedy or musical series and has scored Braugher four Emmy nominations as best supporting actor.

“I’m so thankful to NBC and Universal Television for allowing us to give these characters and our fans the ending they deserve,” said executive producer Dan Goor, in a statement. “When Mike Schur and I first pitched the pilot episode to Andy, he said, ‘I’m in, but I think the only way to tell this story is over exactly 153 episodes,’ which was crazy because that was exactly the number Mike and I had envisioned.”
