Brooklyn Nine-Nine cast and showrunner showed their support for the nationwide Black Lives Matter protests by donating $100,000 (£80,000) to the National Bail Fund Network.

The demonstrations erupted after a Minneapolis police officer took George Floyd’s life by kneeling on his neck for nine minutes.

Across all 50 US states, people are taking to the streets to call for an end to systemic racism and police brutality.

In a Twitter post shared by producer and co-creator Dan Goor, he condemned the murder of George Floyd and pledged support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

“The cast and showrunner of Brooklyn 99 condemn the murder of George Floyd,” Goor said. “[We] support the many people who are protesting police brutality nationally. Together we have made a $100,000 donation to The National Bail Fund Network.

“We encourage you to look up your local bail fund: the National Bail Fund Network is an organization that can lead you to them. #blacklivesmatter."

Alongside the cast’s donation, Stephanie Beatriz — who plays Detective Rosa Diaz on the series — shared that she had donated $11,000 to the Community Justice Exchange in support of the demonstrators.

The 39-year-old wrote: “I’m an actor who plays a detective on tv. If you currently play a cop? If you make tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in residuals from playing a cop? I’ll let you do the math.”

Beatriz’s donation follows Blue Blood’s Griffin Newman who noted the importance for actors who have played police officers on-screen to donate to organizations fighting for social justice reform.
