Bronx man armed with knife and wooden stick shot dead in confrontation with cops

NEW YORK _ A man armed with a knife and wooden stick was shot dead by a Bronx cop after a Taser failed to subdue him, police said Monday.

Two cops responded to a 911 call for harassment at Hill House, run by a social services group that serves people struggling with addiction and other issues, in Morris Heights about 10:50 p.m. Sunday.

When they confronted the 32-year-old suspect, believed to be a resident, on the fourth floor, he moved toward them, a large knife in one hand and a stick, similar to a stickball bat, in the other, police said.

One officer fired his Taser. The electric jolt slowed the man down momentarily but as the officers moved to take him into custody he came at them again, a police source said.

The officer who fired the Taser then fired one shot from his gun, striking the man in the upper body, authorities said. He was rushed to Bronx Lebanon Hospital but could not be saved. His name was not immediately released.

"I woke up this morning and someone told me, 'Your man's dead,'" said Hill House resident Tomas Johnson, 64. "I came downstairs and there were millions of cops everywhere.

"He used to come around my apartment all the time to get high," Johnson said of the dead man. "He's a drug addict."

The two officers, both in uniform and assigned to the 46th Precinct, were taken to Jacobi Medical Center for observation then released.

Police said the shooting appeared to be captured on the officers' body-worn cameras.
