Denver Broncos WR Courtland Sutton is confident in his quarterback Drew Lock. But revealing that confidence had Sutton reliving a haunting memory from the Week 15 game against the Kansas City Chiefs to reporters last Thursday.
“The only game [Drew Lock] lost was to the Super Bowl winners in a snow game,” Sutton said, via Broncos Wire. “We missed some opportunities. I know that y’all have seen the play with Tyrann Mathieu. That play is something that did haunt me for a while. I moved on from it.”
The play that Sutton is referencing was a slot fade route against Chiefs DB Tyrann Mathieu. It’s one of the toughest routes for a slot corner to defend against in general, and Sutton’s size alone should have given him a huge advantage, but it didn’t. Sutton initially made the reception, but Mathieu got his arm in there and swiped the ball away, effectively erasing a touchdown from the scoreboard. The Broncos wouldn’t score a single touchdown during that game.

While Sutton says he’s moved on from that play, it’s clear that he feels he let his quarterback down in Week 15, specifically on that play. That game would mark the ninth consecutive loss to Kansas City for Denver. We’ll get an opportunity to see if Sutton’s optimism about Lock will translate into a win against the Chiefs when the two teams first face each other in Week 7 of the 2020 Season.
