Broncos won’t adjust Joe Flacco’s contract, which includes no dead money

After news broke that the Denver Broncos had agreed to trade for Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, there was some speculation that general manager John Elway might try to restructure the QB’s contract.

That apparently won’t be the case.

The Broncos “will not re-do” Flacco’s contract, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. The 34-year-old QB has three years remaining on his deal and he will have an $18.5 million salary cap hit in 2019.

Flacco will have salary cap hits of $20.25 million in 2020 and $24.25 million in 2021 — if the team decides to keep him around. Denver could cut Flacco without any dead money counting against its salary cap total, according to the QB’s contract details on Spotrac.com.

So the Broncos have little reason to restructure Flacco’s deal. He has a reasonable salary for a starting quarterback, and the team could move on from him at any time without getting into salary cap trouble.

Now the team has to make a decision on Case Keenum.
