Broncos will wear helmet decals to honor Pat Bowlen in 2019

Denver Broncos players will wear helmet decals to honor late owner Pat Bowlen during the 2019 season, team president/CEO Joe Ellis announced during a press conference Monday.

Details of the decal have not yet been announced.

Bowlen died last Thursday after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 75 years old.

During Bowlen’s 35-year tenure, the Broncos had as many Super Bowl appearances (seven) as losing seasons.

After winning a third Super Bowl in 2015, Denver has struggled in more recent seasons. The Broncos have missed the playoffs in each of the last three years.

“The standards have not been met the last couple of years, without a doubt,” general manager John Elway said Monday, according to The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala. “This is a big year for us.

“Pat would have been disappointed in it and it is our job to get it turned around.”

The Broncos will also wear an “NFL 100” jersey patch this season.
