Broncos will make NFL history if they lose to Chargers by one score

Sometimes it’s just not your year.

The Denver Broncos have placed 26 players on injured reserve this season, the second-highest total in the NFL (the Tennessee Titans have had 34 players on IR). The bad luck doesn’t stop there.

The Broncos have lost nine (yes, nine) one-score games this year, including five losses that were decided by just a field goal. According to Pro Football Reference (with hat tips to @dnlp7 and @ndjomo76), that puts Denver within reach of NFL history.

The NFL has had a team finish a season with nine one-score losses 17 times in its history. No team has ever finished with ten.

If the Broncos lose to the Los Angeles Chargers by eight or fewer points on Sunday, Denver will become the first team in NFL history to lose ten one-score games in a season. Certainly not the kind of record the Broncos were hoping to break at the beginning of the season.

The good news: Denver could turn things around in 2023 with fewer injuries and better situational coaching.
