Broncos will let Domata Peko test free agency

The Denver Broncos will not try to re-sign Domata Peko before free agency negotiations begin across the league next month, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. The news has since been confirmed by multiple media outlets.

That means other teams will be allowed to negotiate with — and potentially sign — Peko, a sign that Denver may be prepared to move in a different direction.

There’s still a chance that Peko could re-sign with the Broncos for the 2019 season. If he doesn’t draw much interest during free agency and if Denver still needs more depth after free agency and the draft, the team may consider bringing Peko back on a one-year deal.

Right now, though, Peko’s chances of returning seem to be slim.

Peko, 34, recorded 69 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 30 games over the last two years, earning $7.5 million. He was a reliable defender and a great locker room player, but the Broncos likely want to go younger at the position.

Denver will also let linebacker Brandon Marshall test free agency and it appears likely that center Matt Paradis will hit the open market as well. The new league year — and free agency — will officially begin March 14. Negotiations can begin March 11.
