Broncos will let Billy Turner test free agency

The Denver Broncos hoped to give offensive lineman Billy Turner a contract extension before he became a free agent. That won’t be happening.

Turner has “broken off extension talks” with the team and plans to test free agency, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. That news has since been confirmed by The Athletic’s Nicki Jhabvala.

Turner will be allowed to begin negotiating with teams Monday and can sign a contract Wednesday. Speaking at the NFL combine last month, general manager John Elway indicated that the team would like to bring back both Turner and offensive tackle Jared Veldheer.

“We’re taking a look at Billy Turner and trying to get something done with Billy Turner as well as Jared,” Elway said. “I’d love to bring all our guys back, but there’s only so much we can do.”

Turner started 11 games last season. He is a serviceable starter and an excellent swing backup, capable of playing both guard and tackle.
