Broncos will host RB Theo Riddick on free agent visit

After visiting the Saints on Sunday, former Lions running back Theo Riddick is now scheduled to visit the Broncos, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The 28-year-old free agent became available last week when the Lions released him.

Riddick (5-9, 201 pounds) was selected by Detroit in the sixth round of the 2013 NFL draft out of Notre Dame. Since then, he has emerged as one of the best receiving backs in the league, hauling in 281 receptions over the last five seasons.

Riddick spent the first six years of his career with the Lions and rushed 288 times for 1,023 yards and five touchdowns. More notably, he has racked up 2,238 receiving yards and 14 receiving touchdowns in his career.

If Riddick signs with Denver, it would likely be bad news for Devontae Booker, the team’s current third-down back. Booker has been the Broncos’ receiving back over the last few years but general manager John Elway may view Riddick as an upgrade.

The jobs of Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman are safe.

Denver will likely carry three running backs on the 53-man roster with another back on the 10-man practice squad.
