Broncos will honor Pat Bowlen before first home game against Bears

In addition to wearing a helmet decal to honor Pat Bowlen during the 2019 NFL season, the Denver Broncos will also honor the late owner before their home opener in Week 2 and again in Week 6.

“We are going to do a decal on the helmet,” team president/CEO Joe Ellis said during a press conference Monday. “It will look like this [points to orange oval pin with ‘Mr. B’ on his lapel]. It will be slightly different but it is pronounced. Pat — I don’t think he wanted to be attached to a jersey and probably didn’t want to be attached to a helmet either, but I do think we owe to him to honor him in that way.

“We will do something briefly before the game at our first regular-season game. I’m not going to call for remembrance during a preseason game. We’ll do it in a regular-season game. Then I believe the second weekend of October is our game against Tennessee (Oct. 13) and we will honor he and Champ Bailey. He, for his Hall of Fame appearance and Champ for his Hall of Fame and Ring of Fame appearances. That’ll be a nice moment.”

After facing the Oakland Raiders in Week 1, the Broncos will return home to host the Chicago Bears on Sept. 15. Denver had already scheduled celebrations for Bowlen and Bailey on Oct. 13 in recognition of their Hall of Fame and Ring of Fame nods.

“We’ll bring a lot of people back together here in Denver because not everybody can make it to Canton,” Ellis said.
