Broncos will bring LB Corey Nelson in for a visit

The Broncos will bring in free agent inside linebacker Corey Nelson for a visit, general manager John Elway confirmed Saturday.

Todd Davis, one of Denver’s starting inside linebackers, is recovering from a calf injury and might not be ready in time for the team’s Sept. 9 season opener against the Raiders.

Nelson could provide more depth at linebacker and much-needed help on special teams. The Broncos’ special teams units looked poor in preseason, particularly in kickoff and punt coverage.

Nelson (6-0, 231 pounds) entered the league as a seventh-round pick out of Oklahoma in 2014. He spent the first four years of his career in Denver as a rotational linebacker and key special teams contributor.

Nelson, 27, helped the Broncos win Super Bowl 50 following the 2015 season and totaled 104 tackles and one sack from 2014-2017. In 2018, Nelson signed with the Eagles and had hopes of earning a starting job in Philadelphia.

Nelson ended up not making the Eagles’ 53-man roster last year and he spent part of the season with the Falcons. Nelson spent this summer with the Buccaneers but was cut by Tampa Bay on Friday.

If he passes his physical, Nelson seems likely to sign with Denver.
