Broncos’ updated salary cap space after cutting Darian Stewart

Slowly but surely, the Broncos are starting to create more salary cap space.

After the team acquires quarterback Joe Flacco in a trade with the Ravens, Denver will be left with approximately $19,091,954 in 2019 salary cap space. That number will go up soon.

The team officially announced Thursday that safety Darian Stewart has been released, a move that will save about $3.6 million, bringing their cap space total to $22,691,954.

If quarterback Case Keenum is released, the team will save about $11 million, bringing the cap space total to $33,691,954. And if linebacker Brandon Marshall is cut, the Broncos would save an additional $4,843,750.

So, after making a few more moves, Denver could have about $38,535,704 in salary cap space — and more cap-saving cuts could be on the way. In addition to Stewart, the Broncos may consider moving on from four other players with large salary cap hits in 2019.

NFL free agency will begin on Wednesday, March 13. Denver’s positions of need include cornerback, inside linebacker and offensive tackle. Broncos general manager John Elway will have plenty of funds to work with when the market opens.
