Broncos tried to claim LB Austin Calitro off waivers

The Denver Broncos were among three teams that tried to claim former Seattle Seahawks linebacker Austin Calitro off waivers, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.

The waiver wire order is based on this year’s draft order so the Jacksonville Jaguars (No. 7) beat out Denver (No. 10) for Calitro. The Cincinnati Bengals (No. 11) also put in a claim for the defender.

Calitro (6-0, 245 pounds) entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Villanova with the New York Jets in 2017. He has spent time with six different teams since then. Calitro played in all 16 games with Seattle last season, totaling 45 tackles and one half of a sack.

With inside linebacker Todd Davis (calf) not guaranteed to play in Week 1, the Broncos were looking for more depth. Denver was also poor on special teams during preseason and Calitro was a key player on special teams for the Seahawks last year.

The Broncos were able to bring back Corey Nelson, who will provide depth at ILB and contribute on special teams this season.
