Broncos sign undrafted QB Brett Rypien

The Denver Broncos’ backup quarterback competition is getting crowded.

After the 2019 NFL draft concluded on Saturday afternoon, the Broncos signed undrafted Boise State quarterback Brett Rypien, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Rypien (6-2, 210 pounds) ran a 40-yard dash in 4.91 seconds and ran a 20-yard shuttle in 4.29 seconds at the combine earlier this offseason. NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein has compared him to Nick Mullens, who went undrafted in 2017 and was a fill-in starter with the San Francisco 49ers last season.

During his four years with college football’s Broncos, Rypien completed 64.0 percent of his passes for 13,578 yards with 90 touchdown passes against 29 interceptions. He is the nephew of former NFL quarterback Mark Rypien, who won two Super Bowls during his time with the Washington Redskins.

Denver drafted Missouri quarterback Drew Lock in the second round of the draft and general manager John Elway said he will compete for the team’s backup job behind starter Joe Flacco. Lock’s competition for the backup job will include Rypien, Kevin Hogan and Garrett Grayson.
