Broncos sign RB Khalfani Muhammad to 10-man practice squad

The Denver Broncos signed running back Khalfani Muhammad to their 10-man practice squad, KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis first reported Sunday. The news has since been confirmed by multiple media outlets.

Muhammad (5-9, 174 pounds) led the team with 146 rushing yards on 31 carries in preseason. He also caught nine passes 55 yards and scored one touchdown.

Broncos running back Theo Riddick suffered a shoulder injury in preseason, complicating the team’s backfield. Denver wanted to have three healthy RBs on the active roster to begin the year and Devontae Booker’s experience gave him the edge of Muhammad.

“I think with the injuries we had back there with Riddick, as well as [Andy] Janovich too — that’s what made [Booker] more valuable, because of the fact that we’re down to three backs now with ‘Book,'” GM John Elway said during his media availability Saturday. “But he did a nice job and he knows what we’re doing, he can do a lot of things for us. He’s very versatile.”

Booker made the 53-man roster over Muhammad but that didn’t mean Denver did not have plans for the 24-year-old RB. He will begin the year on the practice squad and if anything happens to one of the RBs on the Broncos’ active roster, Muhammad will be ready to step up.
