Broncos sign QB Brett Rypien to 10-man practice squad

The Denver Broncos signed quarterback Brett Rypien to their 10-man practice squad Saturday, KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis first reported. The news has since been confirmed by multipe media outlets.

Rypien (6-2, 210 pounds) signed with the Broncos as a college free agent in April after a record-breaking career at Boise State. As the fourth QB on the depth chart, he was always going to be a longshot to make the 53-man roster.

When Drew Lock went down with a thumb injury this summer, though, Rypien was given a chance to compete with Kevin Hogan for Denver’s backup job. Neither QB took advantage of the opportunity and both were cut on Saturday.

Rypien, 23, is the nephew of former NFL QB Mark Rypien, who won two Super Bowls during his time with the Redskins. The younger Rypien completed 61.4 percent of his passes in preseason for 207 yards with one touchdown pass against two interceptions.

Rypien is a longterm prospect who will continue to be groomed by the team’s coaching staff without counting against the active roster.
