Broncos sign LB Corey Nelson

The Broncos are signing linebacker Corey Nelson, Greg Auman of The Athletic first reported Sunday. The news has since been confirmed by multiple media outlets.

Nelson (6-0, 231 pounds) was selected by the Broncos in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL draft out of Oklahoma. He spent the first four years of his career in Denver and helped the team win Super Bowl 50 following the 2015 season.

After spending the last two summers competing for roster spots with the Eagles, Falcons and Buccaneers, Nelson is returning to the Broncos to provide more depth on special teams — where he excelled from 2014-2017 — as well as at inside linebacker.

Todd Davis, who usually starts next to Josey Jewell at inside linebacker, has a calf injury and it’s uncertain if he will be healthy in time to start against the Raiders in Week 1.

“We’ll take it a week at the time,” Broncos GM John Elway said of Davis’ status on Saturday. “I think that’s where it goes. Obviously, we’d like to see what happens. The sooner he gets better, the better off we’re going to be. We’d like to have him yesterday, but we’ll have to wait and see.”

Nelson, 27, has totaled 104 tackles and one sack in his career.
