The Denver Broncos secured their 500th win in franchise history on Sunday afternoon (including the playoffs) with a 20-13 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on the road at Dignity Health Sports Park.
It’s fitting that the Broncos’ 500th win came against the Chargers, one of the team’s division rivals dating all the way back to 1960. Denver improved its record in the all-time series to 67-52-1 with Sunday’s victory.
The Broncos’ defense stuffed Los Angeles’ offense, holding them to just two field goals (the Chargers also scored on a punt return in the third quarter). Vic Fangio’s squad forced three turnovers and limited running back Melvin Gordon to just 31 rushing yards.
Denver’s own running back, Phillip Lindsay, had 19 touches for 147 yards and a touchdown. He was arguably the player of the game.
The Broncos are one of the most successful teams in NFL history. Since its founding in 1960, the team has reached the Super Bowl eight times and has won three championships. Denver has won its division 15 times and has reached the postseason 22 times.
Despite the team’s success, the Broncos are underrepresented in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Denver has just seven members in Canton — QB John Elway, RB Floyd Little, TE Shannon Sharpe, OL Gary Zimmerman, RB Terrell Davis, CB Champ Bailey and late owner Pat Bowlen.
With DBs Steve Atwater and John Lynch gaining Hall of Fame momentum and Peyton Manning’s eligibility getting closer, Denver should be better represented in the Hall of Fame within the next few years.
