After failing to reach an agreement on a long-term deal before last month’s deadline, Broncos safety Justin Simmons will play on a one-year franchise tag before becoming a free agent in 2021. Denver won’t be allowed to negotiate an extension with Simmons during the season.
Simmons was asked if he was disappointed about not getting an extension during his Zoom conference call on Thursday.
“I wouldn’t say disappointment,” Simmons said. “I would say, obviously, [I was] hoping for a long-term deal but in the grand scheme of everything going on, this is a first for everyone. You’ve got the pandemic that’s going on and all these different things. So, unfortunately, it just wasn’t able to work out on both sides.”
Simmons explained that he is confident in himself and he believes everything will work out, presumably implying that he will get a big contract next year. For now, he’s simply focused on the 2020 season and helping the Broncos get back to the playoffs.
“Moving forward, as it stands now, obviously I’m under the tag for the year and my focus is right now just bringing this team together as close as we can . . . and really focus on winning football games.”
