Broncos running low on salary cap space after reworking Chris Harris’ contract

After giving cornerback Chris Harris a revised contract and signing three members of their 2019 draft class, the Denver Broncos have $5,514,683 in remaining salary cap space, according to NFL Players Association records.

Last week, Broncos general manager John Elway agreed to increase Harris’ 2019 salary from $8.9 million to $12.05 million. Before that, Denver signed tight end Noah Fant, linebacker Justin Hollins and wide receiver Juwann Winfree to four-year rookie deals.

A large chunk of the team’s remaining $5.5 million will go toward the rookie contracts for offensive lineman Dalton Risner, quarterback Drew Lock and defensive lineman Dre’Mont Jones.

Projections from Spotrac.com predict that those rookies will have salary cap hits of $1,295,534 (Risner), $1,271,722 (Lock) and $760,585 (Jones) this season. If those projections are accurate, the Broncos’ three rookies yet to sign will eat up $3,327,841 in 2019 salary cap space.

That would leave the team with $2,186,842 in remaining salary cap space. If Denver does not use that space, it will roll over into the team’s 2020 total. The Broncos did not use $8 million worth of cap last season and rolled it over into this year’s total. Those extra funds certainly came in handy for the Harris deal.
