Broncos reveal 3 team captains for Week 1

The Denver Broncos won’t have season-long team captains in 2019.

Instead, the team will have game day captains selected on a week-by-week basis. The captains may change from game to game, which means there will no longer be “C” patches on captain jerseys.

Broncos coach Vic Fangio said Saturday that quarterback Joe Flacco (offense), outside linebacker Von Miller (defense) and kicker Brandon McManus (special teams) will serve as the game day captains for Monday’s game against the Oakland Raiders.

Earlier this week, Fangio explained why the team won’t have season-long captains.

“I just think everybody’s got the license to become a leader on the team,” Fangio said. “You don’t need to be appointed. I think leadership is something that somebody takes; it’s not granted to them, whether it be by a coaching staff or a vote. You take it. You don’t get proclaimed that.”

Denver’s season-long team captains last year were quarterback Case Keenum (offense), center Matt Paradis (offense), linebackers Miller (defense) and Todd Davis (defense), McManus (special teams) and fullback Andy Janovich (special teams).

Monday’s game (8:20 p.m. MT) will be nationally televised on ESPN.
