Broncos RBs put team success above personal success

Broncos running backs Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman would both love to rush for over 1,000 yards and score 10 touchdowns in 2019. Devontae Booker would love to get more touches as well.

In today’s NFL, though, a backfield that features multiple talented running backs rarely features a stat monster. Denver will keep their backs fresh by rotating them — that’s great for the team but not necessarily great for each RB’s individual stats.

“We all stick together and that’s how we do it,” Lindsay said after practice on July 22. “When Royce is hot, we are there for Royce. When ‘Book’ is hot, we are there for ‘Book.’ When I get hot, they are there for me.

“I know you guys like to pin us against each other and make it a competition, but at the end of the day we all three wear the same helmet. When it comes down to it, the first game against the Raiders, we all three need to be ready.”

Whoever has the hot hand and whoever can best help the team beat that week’s opponent will lead the way on a week-to-week basis this fall. It won’t lead to huge numbers in fantasy football for any of Denver’s RBs but it could prove to be a winning formula, which is what’s important.
