Broncos RB Phillip Lindsay only needs ‘a couple of carries’ to make an impact

After the Broncos signed veteran running back Melvin Gordon during free agency, fans and pundits quickly realized that Phillip Lindsay will likely see fewer carries this season.

During his media availability on Tuesday, Lindsay was asked if the arrival of Gordon will add fuel to his fire as a competitor.

“Honestly, I’ve had the same fire my entire — from the first time a stepped here to now,” Lindsay said. “I don’t need another man to fuel my fire. I know what I want for my family and that’s what fuels me.

“For me, honestly, nothing changes. I go out there and I produce when my number is called. I make big plays like I always have, and I go from there.”

Gordon will likely serve as Denver’s starter this season but Lindsay will still get plenty of action. The third-year running back indicated that he doesn’t need many touches to have an impact on a game.

“My job is when I get the ball and when I’m in the game to make an explosive play,” Lindsay said. “That’s how I think about it. For me, I’ve never needed 15, 25, a bunch of carries. I just need to get a couple of carries that fit me and I’m explosive with. That’s what I’m going to continue to do.”

Splitting touches with Gordon could actually be helpful for Lindsay because it will keep him fresh and — hopefully — healthy. Having a pair of rotating Pro Bowl running backs should make the Broncos’ run groud game formidable.
