Broncos RB Phillip Lindsay on college football: ‘I don’t think those kids should play’

The NFL is planning to play a season during the COVID-19 pandemic but college football’s fall season is less certain.

The Big Ten and Pac-12 have already postponed their seasons and more college football conferences might follow suit. Broncos running back Phillip Lindsay understands and agrees with the decision to put college football on hold.

“Honestly, it’s scary,” Lindsay said Tuesday. “For those kids, they don’t have the protocols that we have. They don’t have the money to get tested every day and to have people come in here and clean it every day.”

Unlike pro players, college athletes aren’t paid and while colleges do make a lot of money from college football, they don’t have the same resources that NFL teams have.

“Until they can come up with something, I don’t think those kids should play because it is real,” Lindsay said. “I’ve seen people close to me that had it that had to be in the hospital for seven, eight, nine days. It’s scary. It really is. I understand where these kids are coming from, but at the end of the day, it’s about being healthy. It’s about doing the right thing.”

Lindsay suggested that athletes should gain another year of eligibility to play college sports in 2021 but he doesn’t want them to play this fall.

“They’re not giving these kids the money and the tools so that they can be safe,” Lindsay said. “You’re just telling the kid to go out there and play for our satisfaction. That’s not cool. That’s how I feel about it.”
