Broncos' rare win as Riki extends contract

Repairs on the leak of talent out of Red Hill have begun after Jordan Riki agreed to a three-year NRL contract extension with Brisbane on Tuesday.

The backrower was earmarked as a like-for-like replacement when gun prospect David Fifita left for Gold Coast last season.

But there were fears the Broncos could lose the off-contract 21-year-old just days after emerging fullback Reece Walsh had agreed to leave for the New Zealand Warriors.

Highly-rated backrower Brendan Piakura is another who could exit the nest after graduating from the Broncos' development system, while gun pair Kotoni Staggs and Xavier Coates are both off contract and demanding interest.

Without an on-field win for 13 games and more than 250 days - and 0-2 since the arrival of Kevin Walters as coach this season - Riki's commitment until at least the end of the 2024 season was a welcome victory.

"Jordan is a really impressive young man and a player with enormous talent and potential who works hard to improve," Walters said.

"He is exactly the kind of player we want in the Broncos jersey - we are building something special here and have started on that journey together.

"We know where we are headed and we have a plan, Jordan has bought into that and wants to be a part of it and that is something special for the whole club."

Riki has been receiving mentoring from former club great Petero Civoniceva.

"I've made a lot of close friends here at the Broncos - I call them family now - so I'm really comfortable here and I'm just so grateful to be staying," Riki said.

"I've worked my butt off trying to get here and this was my dream and I'm so glad that can stay at this great club."
