Broncos QB Drew Lock sprained his thumb: ‘It should be all right’

Broncos quarterback Drew Lock injured his right thumb during a 24-15 preseason loss to the 49ers on Monday evening. X-rays on Lock’s right hand came back negative, which is a good sign.

“I got out of the pocket and just ended landing on that thumb,” Lock said after the game. “There are some videos out there, obviously I am sure. It’s just a little sprain. It should be all right.”

The rookie quarterback didn’t seem to believe the injury is serious.

“They’ll check it out again tomorrow and I’ll get the further diagnosis tomorrow morning,” Lock said.

Lock, who was selected by Denver in the second round of April’s draft, will have more tests done Tuesday morning. Before leaving Monday’s game, Lock went 7-of-12 passing for 40 yards and rushed twice for 11 yards. He appears to have taken the lead over Kevin Hogan in the backup quarterback competition.

After seeing Lock leave the game in pain against San Francisco, Broncos fans will be relieved to know that the injury seems to be minor.

“I’ve jammed my thumb playing basketball 1,000 times,” he said. “It kind of felt like a jammed thumb and they just wanted to check it out.”
