Broncos projected to have 2nd-most salary cap space in 2022

Denver Broncos general manager George Paton will have the ability to make some splashes in free agency next year.

The Broncos are estimated to have $61.6 million in salary cap space in 2022, according to Jason Fitzgerald of OverTheCap.com. Right now, that’s projected to be the second-highest total in the NFL, only behind the Miami Dolphins ($64.2 million).

Elsewhere in the AFC West, the Los Angeles Chargers are estimated to rank third in the NFL ($59.1 million) and the Las Vegas Raiders are projected to rank tenth ($37 million). The Kansas City Chiefs are 20th ($12.7 million).

Denver will likely use some of its cap space to give contract extensions to players already on the roster. The Broncos’ list of players scheduled to become free agents in the spring includes wide receivers Courtland Sutton and Tim Patrick, inside linebackers Alexander Johnson, Josey Jewell and Kenny Young, quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, running back Melvin Gordon, cornerback Mike Ford and outside linebacker Stephen Weatherly.

The new league year — and NFL free agency — will begin on March 16.
