Broncos players receive performance-based bonuses

Denver Broncos offensive lineman Connor McGovern and safety Justin Simmons are among NFL players that have received large performance-based bonuses from the league.

McGovern has received $300,952 in performance-based pay and $144,472 from the veteran pool for a combined bonus of $445,424, the league announced Thursday. He received the eighth-highest payout in the NFL.

Simmons received $272,010 in performance-based pay and $136,941 from the veteran pool for a combined bonus of $408,952. He received the 22nd-highest payout in the league.

“Performance-Based Pay is computed by using a player index (“Index”),” according to a press release from the NFL. “To produce the Index, a player’s regular-season playtime (total plays on offense, defense and special teams) is divided by his adjusted regular-season compensation (full season salary, prorated portion of signing bonus, earned incentives).

“Each player’s Index is then compared to those of the other players on his team to determine the amount of his Performance-Based Pay.”

The veteran pool operations in a similar manner with the biggest exception being that only players with a year or more of experience are eligible.

KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis has published the complete list of performance bonuses for Broncos players. Safety Will Parks ($303,723) received the third-highest bonus behind McGovern and Simmons. Former quarterback Chad Kelly ($354) received the smallest bonus.

These bonuses were paid by the league, not the Broncos.
