Broncos players preparing for possible work stoppage in 2021

The NFL’s collective bargaining agreement with players is set to expire in 2021 and there’s fear that another lockout or strike could be inevitable. To help players prepare for such a scenario, the NFL Players Association sent a memo to players about saving money for a possible work stoppage.

“That is something we’ve been preparing for,” Broncos cornerback Chris Harris said of a possible work stoppage. “You have to prepare for something like this, especially when we have a minority of guys that don’t make that much money — they make a lot of money but it’s not enough to really hold on for them and their families for that time period if we did have a longer work stoppage.

“We’ve been saving up as a Union and being able to prepare for this, so if it goes long then guys should be ready.”

The last time the CBA expired, in 2011, there was a five-month lockout. The two sides were able to work out an agreement in time for the season. The league would like to have a new CBA in place well before 2021 but that may prove to be wishful thinking.
