Broncos opt not to trade Chris Harris before NFL’s deadline

The NFL’s trade deadline has passed and Chris Harris is still on the Broncos’ roster. He’s not going anywhere.

The Eagles were interested in Harris but felt Denver’s asking price was too high. The Broncos were believed to be seeking a second-round pick. The Lions made an offer but it was too low, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Harris (5-10, 199 pounds) will earn a base salary of $9.8 million this season before becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2020. Denver is not expected to re-sign Harris so there had been speculation that he might be traded.

If the Broncos do not re-sign Harris in March, the team might get a compensatory draft pick for him in 2021, depending on how much he earns on his next contract and how much Denver spends in free agency. The highest comp picks awarded are third-round selections.

Harris entered the league as a college free agent out of Kansas with the Broncos following the 2011 NFL draft. The four-time Pro Bowler helped the team win Super Bowl 50 in 2016 and he is the only cornerback who recorded multiple interceptions each year from 2012-2018. Harris can extend that streak with one more interception this season.

Harris, 30, has totaled 484 tackles and 20 interceptions in his career.
