Broncos OLB Von Miller will have surgery

Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller will undergo surgery after dislocating a tendon near his ankle, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

In the best-case scenario, Miller could return to the team after a three-month recovery. It’s not unusual for this type of surgery to have a five-to-six month recovery but NFL players have returned in three months before.

The in-house candidates to replace Miller in the Broncos’ lineup are Malik Reed and Jeremiah Attaochu. Denver will also likely add a free agent to take Miller’s spot on the 53-man roster after he’s placed on injured reserve.

The Broncos wanted to bring in Clay Matthews but they weren’t able to reach an agreement with the 34-year-old veteran pass rusher. Matthews, a six-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion, has 91.5 career sacks on his resume.

Denver will host the Tennessee Titans in Week 1 (8:20 Monday, ESPN).
