Broncos OG Ron Leary healthy and ready for training camp

Broncos right guard Ron Leary suffered a torn Achilles last October, prematurely ending his 2018 season. The veteran offensive lineman was limited during organized team activities this spring but was back on the field for minicamp earlier this month.

“It’s been nice having him back out this last week,” offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello said after practice on June 5. “Again, he’s a veteran in the league. I really think that he’s a very good scheme fit and his personality has been great in the room.

“I know [offensive line coach] Mike Munchak has enjoyed having him in there. I think that, again, he’s a good fit to balance out the youth. I think that if he’s healthy, he can have a great year. We’re excited to have him.”

Leary is now back to full health and he will be able to fully participate when the team begins training camp practices in July.

“I’m doing everything out there,” Leary said on June 5. “I’ve been cleared by the doctors. Recovery went well. It probably was fast and that’s a good thing. I feel great and I haven’t had any setbacks. I’m doing everything I’ve got to. I feel great.”

Before an injury cut his 2018 season short, Leary was penalized twice and allowed no sacks during a six-game stretch. He will be a key part of Scangarello’s zone-blocking scheme this season.

“I love it,” Leary said of the team’s new blocking style. “That’s all we did at Dallas before. That’s kind of our staple here. It’s getting back to what I did best when I was having my best years in the league, so I’m excited about it.”

Leary, 30, is set to earn a base salary of $8.15 million in each of the next two seasons before becoming a free agent in 2021.
