Broncos officially pick up Chris Harris’ contract option

The Denver Broncos have officially picked up cornerback Chris Harris’ $1 million contract option for the 2019 season, KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis reported Monday. In addition to the $1 million option, Harris will earn another $7.9 million in 2019.

Harris is entering the final season of a five-year, $42.5 million contract. He’s earning an average of $8.5 million per year, which is a bargain for a high-profile Pro Bowl cornerback.

Broncos general manager John Elway said at the NFL combine last month that the team had not yet thought about giving Harris an extension, but the cornerback will probably be re-signed before 2020 free agency.

This year’s NFL free agency signing period will begin this week so Denver has more pressing needs to attend to at the moment, but Harris will likely become a priority later in the year. The Broncos will probably want to give Harris a multi-year extension before he could test the open market next March.

Harris, 29, has recorded 462 tackles, 19 interceptions and 4.5 sacks since joining the team as a college free agent out of Kansas in 2011.

Denver has also picked up contract options for defensive end Derek Wolfe and wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders.
