Broncos’ offense needs to improve in the red zone

Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco led Denver’s first-team offense right down the field in the team’s opening drive against the Seahawks on Thursday evening. Broncos coach Vic Fangio was pleased to see Flacco move the ball — he wasn’t pleased that they ended up settling for a field goal.

“I thought it was good,” Fangio said after the game. “I wish we could have finished the drive. We had a couple of nice runs there early. We had some nice check-downs that moved the sticks.

“I was disappointed in the red zone and that we did not punch it in. That is the difference in four points there we didn’t get. Those add up for you as the game wears on, especially in a game that was close like this was.”

The second- and third-team offenses also struggled in the red zone. One of Drew Lock’s drives stalled and led to a short field goal. If the team’s two field-goal drives had been touchdown drives, Denver would have been in position to tie the game at 22-22 instead of losing 22-14.

“You wish that when you’re in the red zone, you’d be one hundred percent and score touchdowns, which is what we are going to work on this week honestly, being perfect in the red zone,” Lock said. “I think we moved the ball a little bit tonight but I’m upset we didn’t come out with a win.”

The Broncos will look to improve in the red zone when they face the 49ers on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” on Aug. 19.
