Broncos notes: Theo Riddick joins crowded backfield

Before each Broncos game during preseason, we will provide a quick note on the storyline of the week along with a rookie to watch that week. Below are the notes for Week 1 against the Seahawks on Thursday evening.

Reddick joins RB room: The Broncos have added ex-Lions RB Theo Reddick to an already crowded backfield that includes Phillip Lindsay, Royce Freeman, Devontae Booker and three young RBs competing for a spot on the practice squad. Lindsay and Freeman are safe but Booker may be in jeopardy of losing his roster spot. Booker has carved out a role in Denver’s offense as a receiving back but Riddick is clearly an upgrade in that department — he ranks third in receptions (285) among RBs since 2013.

Rookie watch: QB Drew Lock finished the Hall of Fame Game with no touchdowns and a 68.0 passer rating. “He’s still got a lot of work to do,” coach Vic Fangio said. “I thought his accuracy wasn’t clean all the time along with his reads, but that’s to be expected. We’ve got four more games and we’ve got to get him ready, more ready than he is right now.” Unless Lock shows a lot of improvement over the next four weeks, Kevin Hogan will remain the favorite to win Denver’s backup quarterback job.
