Broncos not among reported teams interested in Gerald McCoy

If the Broncos are interested in free agent defensive lineman Gerald McCoy, they’re not letting anyone know about it.

McCoy, 31, was cut by the Buccaneers on Monday and he has a free agent visit scheduled with the Browns for Friday. The Panthers and Bengals are interested in McCoy, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

Denver hasn’t shown interest in the defensive lineman, at least not reported interest. The team probably can’t afford him. After parting ways with McCoy, Tampa Bay signed Ndamukong Suh to a one-year deal worth up to $10 million. McCoy may command a similar salary on his next contract.

After signing their rookie draft class and (maybe?) giving cornerback Chris Harris a pay raise, the Broncos won’t have much salary cap space left for 2019. No team will be able to sign McCoy, a six-time Pro Bowler, to a bargain contract.

Fortunately, Denver has decent interior defensive line depth. Shelby Harris will return this year and the team selected Dre’Mont Jones in the third round of the draft. Zach Kerr will also return in 2019.

Any team could use a player like McCoy, but the Broncos’ defensive line should be just fine without him.
