Broncos noncommittal on Bradley Roby: ‘We’ll see where the process takes us’

After earning $8,526,000 on a fifth-year option last season, Bradley Roby is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins on March 13. The Denver Broncos appear to be in no rush to sign him to an extension before he hits the open market.

“We’re going to see how the free-agent market treats him and we’re going to stay in contact with him,” Broncos coach Vic Fangio said of Roby at the NFL combine on Wednesday. “We still have an interest in him, and we’ll see where the process takes us.”

Roby (5-11, 192 pounds) was selected by the Broncos in the first round of the 2014 NFL draft out of Ohio State. Playing behind Pro Bowlers Aqib Talib and Chris Harris, Roby served primarily as a rotational cornerback through his first four years in the NFL.

Roby excelled as a No. 3 cornerback but after the team traded Talib last year, Roby was thrust into a starting job. Roby had a decent year in 2018 (45 tackles, one interception, two forced fumbles) but he didn’t look like a cornerback worthy of a big contract extension.

If Roby signs with another team during NFL free agency, Denver will need to add more depth at cornerback this offseason.
