Broncos met with DL Malik Carney at NFL combine

The Denver Broncos met with North Carolina edge defender Malik Carney at the 2019 NFL combine, according to Chad Jensen of Mile High Huddle.

Carney (6-2, 251 pounds) ran the 40-yard dash in 4.73 seconds and bench-pressed 225 pounds 25 times at the combine. NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein has compared him to Shaq Barrett, who joined the Broncos as an undrafted free agent out of Colorado State in 2014.

During his four years with the Tar Heels, Carney recorded 176 tackles — including 32.5 tackles for losses — and 17 sacks. If selected by Denver, he would likely play as an outside linebacker in the team’s 3-4 defense.

Carney is the 56th-best edge defender in this year’s class, according to rankings from DraftScouts.com. He will likely be a late-round pick or undrafted free agent in April.

With Barrett and Shane Ray both expected to leave during free agency, the Broncos could use more depth at outside linebacker. Carney may be among the pass rushers Denver will consider in April.
