Broncos may use Von Miller in coverage more often in 2019

Denver Broncos outside linebacker Von Miller is known primarily as a pass rusher — he owns 98 career sacks, after all. The 30-year-old edge defender also occasionally drops into coverage, though.

Miller has two interceptions in his career, returning one of them for a touchdown and the other one 42 yards. He’s certainly capable of dropping into coverage when asked to do so.

This year, new coach Vic Fangio may ask Miller to drop into coverage more often than fans have seen over the last few years.

“I’m going to be more in coverage this year,” Miller said during an appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio this week. “I’ve always felt like coverage is a huge part of my game. I don’t want to rush the passer just every single play.

“There’s only so many pass-rush moves that you can have over the course of a game. I feel like this team can really use my pass-rush abilities [and I’ll also] be dropping into coverage and I’ll be rushing the passer this season. You know, Coach Fangio, he’s an excellent defensive coordinator — he has answers for everything.”

Some fans in Denver may not be too thrilled about the idea of Miller doing less of what he does best, but if it works, fans won’t be able to argue with the results.
