Broncos LB Todd Davis loves that Vic Fangio will call out any player

Broncos coach Vic Fangio doesn’t play favorites. If somebody makes a mistake, he’ll let them know about it.

Nobody is immune to criticism.

“He knows everybody’s job no matter what the play is and what the route is or a route concept,” linebacker Todd Davis said after practice on May 30. “He knows what you’re supposed to be doing. The thing I love about him is in meetings he’s not afraid to call anybody out no matter who you are — Pro Bowl or not, All-Pro, it doesn’t matter.

“If you’re not doing something or not doing your job, he’ll call you out in front of everybody, and I love it. I think everybody is held to a higher accountability level and keeps us all where we need to be.”

Fangio is a defensive mastermind and he’s known as a linebacker guru. That’s good news for Davis, who was in danger of losing his starting job when Fangio arrived. Denver opted not to select an inside linebacker early in April’s draft, perhaps a sign of their confidence in Davis’ ability to improve under Fangio.

The 27-year-old linebacker recorded a career-high 114 tackles last season but he’s struggled in coverage throughout his career. If Fangio can help Davis improve that area of his game, the linebacker should be able to hold onto his starting job for at least the 2019 season.

If Davis doesn’t improve, he’s certainly going to hear about it.
